"This is the fast I desire: To unlock fetters of wickedness and untie the cords of the yoke to let the oppressed go free...It is to share your bread with the hungry, and to take the very poor into your home; When you see the naked, to clothe him..." (Isaiah 58:6-7)
When the world was created, God intended for all living things to enjoy the earth's bounty with food and shelter that would allow all creatures to feel safe, warm and nourished. No one is chronically homeless or hungry in the Torah. At the end of every meal, when we chant birkat hamazon (Grace After Meals) we conclude with this aspirational verse from Psalm 37: "I was young and now I am old; yet I have not seen the righteous so forsaken that his children were begging for bread."
Only we, through our generosity and acts of lovingkindness, can make this vision a reality. JCoOC is proud to partner with many holy organizations that work day in and day out to mitigate the suffering of our brothers and sisters experiencing food and shelter insecurity.
