Tzedak-a-the-Month

The Jewish Collaborative of Orange County embraces our mission to be a force for communal good through acts of tikkun olam, by caring for our most vulnerable neighbors. While the long-term impact of Covid-19 on OC’s growing number of at-risk residents is impossible to quantify at this time, we know that OC food banks are serving twice the number of people pre-pandemic, and distributing double the pounds of food.  

 

Prior to Covid-19 our volunteers were providing and serving meals monthly to the residents of the Courtyard Transitional Center in Costa Mesa. In addition to meals, the JCoOC volunteer team collected and distributed basic essential clothing and toiletry items as well. 

 

In December, 2020, Tzedak-a-the-Month donations were used to support the homeless population of Orange County through bulk purchases (1000+) of groceries, underwear, shoes, water, meal kits, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and more. Through your support we purchased 600 "Backpacks of Love" and filled them with essential food, hygiene items, and clothing to provide warmth for the winter. These backpacks were distributed to Orange County's unhoused, and those staying in homeless shelters. We are grateful for your support and our partnership with City Net to make this happen.  

 

In July, 2020 we partnered with the Orange County Jewish Coalition for Refugees to raise awareness of the global refugee crisis and how asylum seekers locally are being affected. We heard testimony of asylum seekers from South America, their journey to the US border, conditions in immigration detention, and the challenges they face upon release. Together as part of a coalition and community that embodies the mitzvah of "Welcoming the Stranger", over $7,000 was raised and distributed to Home for Refugees, World Relief SoCal, and the Haitian Bridge Alliance.
